Gum grafting

If you have receding gums, your dentist might suggest gum grafting surgery. Receding gums can expose your tooth roots, and it becomes more prone to getting decayed and sensitive. Gum grafting rectifies the receding gums by attaching a tissue in the concerned area. This is a simple surgical procedure that is quick and painless. Depending on the conditions of your gums, your periodontist will decide your ideal gum grafting technique.

What are the different types of gum grafting surgeries?

Depending on your individual needs, your periodontist might suggest any one of the following gum grafting procedures:

  • Gingival Graft- Here, your periodontist will remove a small portion of your tissue from the roof of your mouth and suture it to the receded gum area. Your periodontist will usually recommend this surgery if your gums are thin and need extra tissues to stay in place.
  • Connective tissue graft- Here, your periodontist will remove a flap from the roof of your gums and then take connective tissues from the top layers. He would then stitch this tissue to the concerned gum area to prevent any further recession.
  • Pedicle graft- Your periodontist will create a flap right next to the area where your gum has recessed, and he will use that flap to cover the concerned area. But it is possible only if the area around the recession has enough gum tissues to create that extra flap.

Benefits of gum grafting

The gum grafting procedure offers multiple benefits like:

  • It protects your gums from further recession.
  • It prevents tooth-root decay and tooth loss.
  • It reduces tooth sensitivity.
  • It prevents bacteria build-up and infections.
  • It improves your overall smile.
